In 1335, King Casimir the Great decided to found a new town here.
He wanted to defend Krakow from the South, have more control over Krakow’s elite ,had a relationship with a woman called Ester and distributed businesses.
Kazimierz was granted town rights under Magdeburg Law and was designed according to a regular medieval street plan, with a large market square at its centre.
The town was surrounded by defensive walls, towers, and gates, making it an important part of Kraków’s defence system.
